The health benefits of the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids — DHA and EPA omega-3 — are the best known. These benefits were discovered in the 1970s by researchers studying the Greenland Inuit Tribe. The Greenland Inuit people consumed large amounts of fat from seafood, but displayed virtually no cardiovascular disease. The high level of omega-3 fatty acids consumed by the Inuit reduced triglycerides, heart rate, blood pressure, and atherosclerosis.

On September 8, 2004, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration gave “qualified health claim” status to EPA and DHA fatty acids, stating that “supportive but not conclusive research shows that consumption of EPA and DHA  may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.”

The Canadian Government has recognized the importance of DHA omega-3 and permits the following biological role claim for DHA: “DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid, supports the normal development of the brain, eyes and nerves.”

Fat is classified into saturated fats, polyunsaturated fats, and monounsaturated fats. Saturated fats are believed to increase your risk for heart attacks when you take in more calories than you burn. We used to think that all polyunsaturated fats help to prevent heart attacks when they replace saturated fats, but now we have different information. Polyunsaturated fats are classified by their structures into omega-3s and omega-6s, and you need both types; these are called the essential fatty acids because you cannot make them in your body and must get them from your food.

For most of the time humans have been on earth we have eaten foods containing omega-6′s and omega-3‘s in a ratio of about 2:1. However, over the last 50 years in North America, the ratio has changed to from 2:1 to 10-20:1. Our diet now includes huge amounts of oils that are extracted from plants and used for cooking or in prepared foods. These oils (such as corn oil, safflower oil, cottonseed oil, peanut oil, soybean oil) are primarily omega-6s. We have decreased our intake of omega-3′s, found primarily in whole grains, beans and other seeds, and seafood.

Guest Article: Fish Oil’s Omega 3 Fatty Acids and Anti-Aging
You can almost always tell a person who has had a stroke in the past from just looking at them. In a much similar way you can tell that a person has once had a heart attack, some kind of cancer, or serious disease in the course of their lives. Ok, perhaps you might not be able to tell what exact disease they suffered from, but you can certainly tell that they are unhealthy at the moment, or that sometime in their past they suffered from some malady that really took its toll on them.

You can tell all of this from the look on their faces and the way they carry themselves – of course, not in everyone, but arguably in most people. Diseases leave their tattletale signs on sufferers and survivors in such a manner that is hard to deny… and one of such ways is the wrinkles and the signs of aging that start to mark not only your face, but your entire body.

Omega 3 oils, especially DHA, are routinely in the headlines for their extensive science demonstrating the ability to reduce heart disease, lower triglycerides, improve brain function, help weight management, and reduce the chronic low-grade inflammation associated with virtually any disease of aging. A new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows for the first time that omega 3 oils also possess a powerful anti-aging characteristic – the preservation of telomeres.

In scientific circles it’s called the Hayflick limit, pegging the potential lifespan of humans at 120 years (a mathematical calculation). After that time, in theory, your cells run out of the ability to split and divide – meaning that you have lost the potential to regenerate and rejuvenate.
