It’s been well established that omega-3 fatty acids,
a type of polyunsaturated fat found primarily in seafood, can improve
your chances of living longer if you have heart disease. But its
healing powers don’t stop there. Other organs may benefit. They
have a positive impact from the womb to old age.

We're
constantly being told by the media to decrease our fat consumption
and to increase our intake of complex carbohydrates. If you're
diabetic here's what happens. Your weight balloons because you raise
your insulin demand. Complex carbohydrates are broken down into
glucose and then insulin stores the excess sugar as body fat and
triglycerides. The result is that over 100 million Americans (about
64%) are heavier than ever before. This is deadly advice for diabetics.
The secret is not in eating less fat, but the right fats.

Essential Vision Tip: An Easy Way to
Relieve Damaging Eyestrain Caused by Computers and Reading
The human eye is not meant to spend hours focusing at objects close
to it. It is naturally in a
relaxed state when looking at something at further distances, approximately
7 feet and beyond.
Research has shown that long hours spent on a computer or reading
can lead to permanent damage
caused by this “near-point stress.” Think about all
the people you know that wear glasses. Most
likely they are either avid students, readers, computer users, or
spend long durations viewing
objects close to them.
A simple way to relieve stress in the eye is called the “Distant
Night Exercise.” Here’s how it works:
1. Sit down in a chair and place your elbows on your knees or a
table.
2. Face your palms toward your face and slightly cup the lower portion
of your hands while keeping your
fingers straight.
3. Place your eyes in the cups of your hands, which should gently
rest above and below the bone surrounding
your eye and cheek. No portion of your hand should touch your eyeball,
but it is alright if your eyelashes
brush against your palm. The fingers of both hands should slightly
overlap resting near the center top of
your forehead. With your eyes open, be sure there is no light entering
into your eyes.
4. While maintaining this position, relax and close your eyes while
you imagine you’re looking into the
distant night. Remember, your eyes are relaxed as they look out
at a distance – the purpose of this exercise.
5. As you focus into the distance you should feel a reduction in
eyestrain caused by the near point activity.

Can
stress cause diabetes?
No. There is no evidence that stress causes diabetes. However,
stress may sometimes unmask diabetes, by causing blood glucose levels
to rise. This is often seen after a heart attack or stroke, where
raised blood sugar levels may be encountered for the first time.
Dr Barry Sears Answers This Question
The elevated blood glucose comes from a decreased ability of the
pancreas to pump out enough insulin. This is primarily due to increased
fat accumulation in the pancreas due to the unregulated release
of free fatty acids stored in the adipose tissue. This release of
free fatty acids is primarily due to inflammation in the adipose
tissue and subsequent development of insulin resistance in the fat
cells. The combination of the Zone Diet and high-dose fish oil provides
a very powerful anti-inflammatory approach to reduce insulin resistance
in the adipose tissue and thus reverse the fat accumulation in the
pancreas. The end result is that your blood glucose levels will
drop.

Fats: The Good, The Bad, and Omega 3
This has become a hot topic lately. There is so much talk of
fats, the healthy fats, the bad fats, the trans fats. I have done
some research on fats, trying to keep it simple for us. Here is
some important information I have come up with. Omega 3 has become
a favorite topic of mine. It has such amazing health improvement
qualities. Remember, this is for your information only, and not
meant as gospel nor is it meant for diagnostic purposes. Read

A
question posed to Dr Barry Sears about Protein and Cancer and
The Zone Diet.
Menopause
Q. I may be in menopause. I am
having some of the symptoms. I have
been using the OmegaRx fish oil
for approximately six months. I
take six tablets a day, but I am
concerned that may not be enough
because I am not feeling my best
(moods swings mostly). Should I
up my dosage, and if so, how much?
Thanks, Jan
A. Dear Jan, I would increase the
fish oil to at least eight capsules
per day and consider adding about
100-150 mg of soy isoflavones per
day to your diet. The
combination is very helpful.
Dr. Barry Sears was asked this question.

I'm
worried about contaminants in
seafood. Should I be concerned,
and what do you recommend in terms
of my fish intake?
Seafood and fish are a great source
of low-fat protein and heart-healthy
omega-3 fatty acids. Unfortunately,
though, there is growing contamination
of fish worldwide with toxic heavy
metals (such as mercury) and PCBs.
Does this mean you should exclude
fish from your diet? No. Fish is
still a healthy option, as long
as you stick with low-fat varieties,
such as sole, which are safer. Low-fat
fish have lower levels of contaminants
because they have less fat for the
toxic deposits to settle in. According
to the FDA, shrimp, salmon, pollack,
and catfish are also good choices,
while swordfish, shark, tilefish,
and king mackerel have high levels
of mercury. Also, albacore tuna
and tuna steaks have more mercury
than chunk light. And wild fish,
such as salmon, have lower levels
of contaminants than farm-raised
fish. This is because the crude
fish-oil fed to farm-raised fish
to help them grow is very rich in
toxic contaminants.
I usually eat low-fat fish about
three to four times a week. I also
take high dose pharmaceutical-grade
fish oil, in which these environmental
toxins have been reduced to incredibly
low levels, every day. It's a great
— and less risky — way to get the
same health benefits.

Excess we ight
in teens
Q. Hello, I have been in the
Zone for more than three years and
very happy. Yesterday I saw a teen-ager
in the news weighing more than 350
pounds, and I was totally shocked.
I am wondering what he would have
to do to be in control of his weight.
I mean he could start the Zone and
continue it, but how long would
it take for so much excess weight
to be eliminated? Do people like
him have another problem? That is
unclear because he stated that he
has been checked thoroughly, and
everything came out negative. His
thyroid and other hormonal tests
were normal, according to his doctors.
I would really like to hear your
comments on this matter.
Thank you, Clara
A. Dear Clara,
He could expect to lose a maximum
of about 1 1/2 pounds of fat per
week on the Zone without hunger
or deprivation. It will take him
about two-three years to lose the
weight. He is considered metabolically
healthy obese. His problem is controlling
his insulin levels. Once he masters
that, the rest is easy.
